Aust to Bristol

Friday 19th July 2024 - 15 miles / 8 hours

IMG 0658

This walk follows a pilgrimage route from Aust to Bristol Cathedral and is one of our longer walks.  The route is mostly flat and easy walking, despite the distance involved.  Aust is associated with an ecclesiastical meeting in the seventh century whose aim was to resolve a dispute between the Roman church and the Celtic church - you can read the story here

Starting at St John's Church in Aust we walk through fields and along country lanes, before crossing the M5 motorway and entering the suburbs of Bristol. We pause at Stoke Gifford for lunch and then continue through the campus of the University of the West of England and onto Purdown hill with its World War 2 defences and Grade 2 listed telecommunications tower, and splendid views towards the city centre.

From there the walk takes to the city streets and lanes, through Montpelier, Kingsdown and down the famous Christmas Steps into the city centre, finishing at Bristol Cathedral.  There is the option of staying for choral evensong at the cathedral, and transport will be organised to return you to Aust.

Cost: £45, to include return transport to Aust.  We will stop at the St Michael's Coffee Shop, Stoke Gifford, for lunch.
