Holy Island Pilgrimage
Tuesday 27th May 2025 - 6 miles / 6 hours
The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is an inspiring, peaceful and stunning setting for this pilgrimage walk, as we follow in the footsteps of countless others who have travelled here on pilgrimage ever since the original monastery was founded by St Aidan in the seventh century.
This is a leisurely walk around the Holy Island, stopping at various points to pause and reflect upon the history and spiritual power of this 'Cradle of Christianity' for northern England. The walk starts with the 3-mile crossing of the sands on the historic pilgrimage path and then takes you to the ruins of the abbey, the parish church of St Mary and the island where St Cuthbert lived as a hermit for a short time, before he sought further seclusion on the island of Inner Farne.
The crossing of the sands is usually done barefoot and is the most challenging part of the pilgrimage. The rest of the walk is on flat footpaths and tarmac paths. We will consider what it is to be a pilgrim, following in the footsteps of others who have gone before us, and reflect on the invitation to follow the Way of Jesus. We will give time for you to find your own space for some peace and solitude before an optional evening meal together on the island to close out the pilgrimage.
Cost: £35. Bring your own lunch or purchase something to eat on Holy Island.
