Bath Abbey Labyrinth Walk
Sunday 9th March 2025 - 6 miles / 4 hours
We begin our series of Lent walks with this short but spectacular pilgrimage to Bath Abbey. Bath Abbey is a masterpiece of English perpendicular gothic architecture, set in the heart of this grand and stately city. Our walk starts a few miles to the east at St John the Baptist Church. Batheaston. There is an option of joining the local congregation for their morning service at 10.00am. We will then look at the labyrinth set into the floor of the church, before heading uphill to Little Solsbury hill fort, which provides panoramic views and a second labyrinth, cut from the turf.
Descending to the Rover Avon valley, the route crosses the river and meets the Kennet and Avon canal, which we follow into Bath. At the attractive Sydney Gardens the walk leaves the canal and heads into the city centre along the magnificent Great Pulteney Street which leads to the famous Pulteney Bridge. Here, there is a final labyrinth to walk, before we head to the Abbey to conclude the journey.
Labyrinths are an ancient symbol and tool for reflecting upon one's own life journey, so this walk will provide an opportunity to consider how the outward journey of the pilgrimage and labyrinth walking resonates with your own life experiences.
There is an option of staying for choral evensong at the Abbey, which starts at 3.30pm. Return to Batheaston is by public transport.
Cost: £30. Bring your own lunch.
