Bath Labyrinth Walk

Sunday 14th July 2024 - 6 miles / 4 hours

DSC08378

A labyrinth is similar to a maze, but consists of a one-way path which twists and turns on a circuitous route from the outside edge to the centre.  You can't get lost in a labyrinth, you simply follow the path until you reach the centre, then retrace your steps outwards again.

Labyrinths have been used as spiritual tools to aid prayer and reflection since the beginnings of recorded history.  They can also be used as a pilgrimage walk of their very own.  In Medieval times many pilgrims would end their journey with a walk into a labyrinth to conclude their pilgrimage experience.

This walk starts at St John the Baptist Church, Batheaston, near Bath, where there is a paved labyrinth in the floor of the church.  There is an option to join the church for morning worship.  After the service we will trace the labyrinth, enjoy some quiet in the building and then set off on the journey.

The walk then takes you up to Little Solsbury Hillfort, which provides impressive views over the city and features a labyrinth cut from turf.  Then descending to the cross the River Avon at Bathampton, the walk continues into the city along the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath, before finishing at a paved labyrinth in Beazer Gardens, next to the Pulteney Bridge and weir.  There is an option of staying for Evensong at Bath Abbey afterwards.

On this walk we will spend time in the labyrinths, considering the journey of our lives, reflecting upon the changes and turning points, and considering our own life goals.

Cost: £30.  Return to Batheaston by public transport.  Bring your own lunch or purchase something en route.
