Chepstow to Tintern on Offa's Dyke

Saturday 14th September 2024 - 8 miles / 4 hours

IMG 0540

This walk through stunning countryside on the border between England and Wales takes us to ancient places of worship, some still vibrant and in use, others fallen into ruin and speaking of past glories.

The walk starts in Chepstow at the historic church of St Mary.  After some time to linger in the church the route heads out of the town over Telford's attractive bridge over the River Wye and then follows the Offa's Dyke path up the Wye valley to Tintern.  There is a short detour at Lancaut to stop at a pretty ruined church set in a picturesque location overlooked by cliffs and woodland at a bend in the river.   Further along the way the remains of Offa's Dyke can be seen and at the intriguingly-named Devil's Pulpit there is an unexpected vista to the ruins of Tintern Abbey far below.

The route descends to the Abbey ruins, where there is time to linger and then reflect together on the history and spirituality of the region.

Cost: £45, to include admission to Tintern Abbey and return to Chepstow by public transport.  Bring your own lunch.
